Spa's first team come out on top in battle with second string, Spa under 12's enjoy more success

IT was a busy weekend for Droitwich Spa Hockey Club, with the men’s 1st and 2nd sides facing off against each other, and the under 12’s side in tournament action.

The battle of the Spa sides proved to be a one-sided contest in the 1st team’s favour, romping to a 4-0 victory against Spa 2nd’s.

A win boosts Spa 1’s promotion push, whilst Spa 2’s miss an opportunity to push further up the table.

Both sides played out an even first-half, with penalty corners for either team failing to lead to an opener.

A quickfire double towards the end of the half saw 1’s take a commanding lead heading into the break, Craig Timmis and Lee Wakelam netting their tenth and eighth goals of the season respectively.

Again, it would prove an even half in the second period, but Spa’s first team had the upper hand with the amount of opportunities created, and put the finishing touches to their attacking moves.

Hew Selvey and Andrew Rollason added to the lead, moving Spa 1’s up to second in the league with their ninth win of the season.

Spa’s first team next host a local derby against third placed Bromsgrove tomorrow (1:30pm), whilst Spa 2’s travel to Solihull Blossomfield (12pm).

Elsewhere, Droitwich’s under 12’s continued their excellent form with two more wins on Sunday, albeit opening the day with a 3-0 loss to a strong Worcester side.

Spa recovered to edge Colwall and Malvern 1-0 thanks to Ross Dyson’s strike, before netting twice more to snatch a 2-1 win against Harborne.
