Spa slip to convincing defeat against Belbroughton

Droitwich Editorial 25th Jul, 2019   0

DROITWICH Spa were unable to build on their previous win in Worcestershire County League Division One, after being humbled by Belbroughton.

A poor batting display in reply to Belbroughton’s 163-7 total meant that Spa were never likely to threaten the visitors’ total, after being dismissed for just 69 runs in the 30th over.

The visitors elected to bat first, and while not putting together many big-scoring partnerships, continued to accumulate runs – mainly in part to number three Peter Hawk (84).

Aside from their talisman, Belbroughton’s batting order did not offer much by the way of support, with tailender Ben Hawker’s (17no) total the only score of note.

Spa’s bowlers did relatively well to limit their opponents’ score, despite losing captain Max Young to an early injury, with Martyn Davies (2-21) the pick of the bunch.

A devastating display by Belbroughton bowler Jamie Mackenzie (3-19) quickly dismantled the Droitwich innings, as he, alongside Stuart Hawk (4-13) reduced Spa to a score of 11-4.

The hosts never recovered from their early downfall, with opener Davies the only batsman who managed to save face with his top score of 28, and were dismissed in the 30th over.

Droitwich sit second-bottom in the league, and will need to raise their game when hosting third-placed Bromyard on Saturday (1pm).
