Spa blown away by ruthless Coombs Wood, but hope for better fortunes against Hagley

DROITWICH Spa fell to a third successive defeat, after tumbling to an eight-wicket defeat at Coombs Wood in Worcestershire County League Division One.

The result means Spa remain second bottom in the league, with their struggles always looking likely to continue after losing captain Martyn Davies at 5-1.

Stuart Bryan and Rhys John added 43 before the second wicket, when the latter was dismissed for seven, before Bryan went at 59-3.

Kieran Wilkins (25), Jez Hanson (26) and Phillip Thomas (30) added valuable runs en route to an eventual 167 total, with Adam Keen (3) the final batsman to go in the 48th over.

Spa made a promising start to the second innings by making two early dismissals – courtesy of the bowling of Matt Gurr and an excellent run out by Adam Keen.

But that was as close as Droitwich got to bringing down Coombs Wood, as Mike Langford (59) and Dan Jones (82) put together an unbeaten 133-run partnership to secure victory with ten overs remaining.

They next host second-placed Hagley on Saturday (1pm).

Spa Seconds fared no better against Hagley Seconds in Division Five, after being dismissed for 178 – losing by three wickets.

Openers James King (48) and Dave Huntbatch (39) formed 97 for the first wicket, but from there Droitwich quickly fell away en route to being bowled out in the 45th over.

Huntbatch was equally effective in the ball in hand, taking 5-27, but was unable to prevent Spa from defeat with four overs remaining.

Spa hope to climb away from the relegation zone when visiting Claverley on Saturday (1pm).
