Owen targets FA Vase shock after eight-goal thriller

SALTMEN boss Mark Owen is aiming to take a scalp in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday (3pm), a week after his Droitwich Spa side thrashed Allscott 7-1.

A James Lemon hat-trick, a Connor Collins brace and goals from Alex Dugmore and Bradley Burgess secured a huge win in the club’s first home game at Walshes Meadow this season, putting Spa in good stead ahead of doing battle with Tividale.

And Owen says his troops have their sights set on progression to the next round on their travels to the Black Country.

“It’s a big one on Saturday, we go into it full of confidence,” he said.

“We’re the underdogs against a side two leagues above, but we’ll try our best to get a result.

“We’ll go and try and win the game as we always do, we want to challenge ourselves, make the most of it but also to enjoy the day.”

Last weekend’s win did not go in the hosts’ favour to begin with, after an even start to proceedings.

It took until the 39th minute for the opener to arrive, courtesy of Collins’ penalty after his strike partner Lemon had been brought down.

Allscott levelled through Rune Corinaldi just four minutes later, but a goal from Lemon on the stroke of half time put the pieces in place for one-way traffic in the second half.

Droitwich peppered Allscott’s goal after the restart and eventually secured a two-goal cushion through Dugmore’s cross which was turned in by a visiting defender.

Lemon then struck with a fourth, rounding the keeper to finish, followed by Collins’ well-taken strike.

With 15 minutes to go, Lemon wrapped up his hat-trick before substitute Burgess rounded off victory with a sumptuous chip over the keeper into the net.

The Spa manager said the performance after the break was greatly improved, and said: “We were lucky to be ahead at half time, we didn’t perform well in the first half.

“At half time, we said a few things and came out a lot better in the second half.

“Considering we were going into the game knowing a lot about them, it was a great win.”

Owen says Spa have a clean bill of health for the weekend, but confirms the departure of midfielder Max Crisp to Studley.
