Olympics a step closer for Droitwich ABC's Joe Doyle

DROITWICH Amateur Boxing Club’s Joe ‘The Golden Boy’ Doyle is one step closer to fulfilling his Olympic dream after being selected for the England Talent Programme.

The 15-year-old Blessed Edward Oldcorne pupil, who is five-times Midlands champion and has a national title to his name, was chosen after impressing at an open talent day organised by England Boxing in Tamworth.

He will now attend monthly training camps when he will be hoping to demonstrate he can box at elite level and earn the chance to represent his country in the prestigious Tri-Nations tournament and European Championships.

“Joe could not be happier as he has worked so hard to get on the England team,” said his father and coach Jayson.

“He travelled up to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for an induction and kitting out.

“The coaches made him feel very welcome and he felt very much at home and is looking forward to getting down to business, particularly as his ambition is to fight for Great Britain at the Olympics.

“Back at Droitwich, the whole club is made up for him and hope that can make the most of this opportunity and potentially fulfil his ambition of boxing for Team GB at the Olympics.”

For the first time in nearly three years, Doyle will be in competitive action locally when he represents a Central All Stars team against the Southern Elite at Bishop Perowne School sports hall in Worcester on Sunday, June 17.

Tickets are available by calling the event promoter Todd Reeves on 07986 969891.
