No reward for struggling Spa - The Droitwich Standard

No reward for struggling Spa

DROITWICH RFC produced a spirited performance, but they still could not get on the scoreboard as Newbold swept to a 29-0 win at Parkfield Road.

The away side’s hopes of collecting on their second victory of their Midlands Two West (South) were dashed within the opening two minutes as Newbold crossed the whitewash.

Their opponents continued dominate the opening 20 minutes with some slick handling and they soon added to their advantage, with Shaun Pollard going over.

Despite the blustery conditions, Droitwich tried to play the game in the right way, while Daniel Wilkinson gave Spa some valuable metres. He also set up James Thomas for a great chance to score, but he was stopped agonisingly close of the line.

This would have changed the shape of the game, but instead Newbold remained on top and opened up a 15-0 lead at half time.

Droitwich would have been hoping to take advantage of having the wind behind their backs, but Newbold refused to give the visitors an inch and put themselves further in front with a try from Declan George.

Despite the early blow, the next 30 minutes were spent in Newbold’s half as Spa cranked up the pressure in a bid to reduce their arrears.

But they could not get the breakthrough their play deserved as Samuel Davenport’s try was ruled out for a knock on. Sean Walker also went close, but frustratingly for Spa he was held up as they ended scoreless.

Speaking after the game, skipper Walker, whose side host Nuneaton Old Edwardians on Saturday, said: “We can be proud of the way we played in the second half against the toughest team we are likely to come up against this season. However we do need to find that try scoring touch to round off our attacking plays.”
