Losing draw for Droitwich Ladies C

DROITWICH Ladies C picked up a losing draw at David Lloyd Dudley in Division Five East of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League.

Despite the best efforts of Elizabeth French and Diane Owen they lost their first match 3-6, 1-6 and their second 1-6 2-6.

Elizabeth Fielden and Christina Sellers lost their first match 0-6, 1-6 but did well to fight back from behind to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their second.

Aileen Baker and Alexa Dean were in top form and won both of their matches 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 respectively but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to secure the win.




The Men’s C continued their Division Four East campaign with a defeat at Worcester C.

Kevin Hodges and Ben Steel fought hard in both of their matches but unfortunately lost them 4-6, 4-6 and 2-6, 2-6 respectively.


It was a similar story for Ian Ross and Carlos Segura who lost 1-6, 0-6 and 1-6, 5-7 respectively in their matches.

Meanwhile, David Lamb and James Stanford gave their all but lost their first game 1-6 2-6 and their second 2-6, 0-6 as Worcester proved to be too strong.

The Mixed E team played two matches in the week as they looked to climb up the Division Six East table.

On Monday they faced Bewdley D but suffered a 3-1 defeat.

Eileen Probyn-Skinner and Steve Whittaker lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-7 in a match which could have gone either way before a 0-6, 6-7 loss in their second.

Jackie Holliday and Phil Woodhouse lost 3-6, 4-6 in their first match but responded with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win in their second but it was not enough as Bewdley claimed victory.

Droitwich then claimed a winning draw at home to Halesowen.

Julia Rollit and Philip Shaw lost their first match 3-6, 6-7 but upped their games considerably in their second, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Eileen Probyn-Skinner and Sam Reavey won their first match 6-1, 6-3 but lost their second 1-6, 0-6.

However, with the scores tied in matches and sets, Droitwich claimed the winning draw on games 34-32.

The Ladies Aegon team were crowned champions of Division One following their 6-0 victory at local rivals Redditch.

Dee Smith dominated her singles match and ended up winning 6-0, 6-0.

Marelize Yorke also won her singles match 6-3, 6-3 as both Penny Maidment and Karen Dobson won theirs 6-2, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively.

The doubles were equally as impressive as Smith and Yorke raced to a 6-2, 6-1 victory and Maidment and Dobson sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-2 success in their doubles match.

The Men’s Aegon C sit fourth in Division Four after losing 5-1 to a strong Hallow B outfit.

Chris Passey lost his singles match 0-6, 1-6 while Bob Smith and Sam Reavey also lost 6-1, 1-6, 0-1 and 0-6, 1-6 respectively in their doubles matches.

Ricky Hollander gave Droitwich a glimmer of hope with a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 win in his singles match.

However, despite the best efforts from the team Hallow won both of the doubles matches in straight sets.

The Men’s Aegon B team boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from Division Three with victory over Redditch B.

Under pressure Droitwich produced some excellent tennis with straight set singles wins for Eric Cartelet, John Moran and Ben Steel followed by a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the doubles.

In total, Droitwich won all six matches for the loss of just five games to take a big step towards survival.

Meanwhile, the Men’s Aegon A team tasted a 4-2 defeat to Barnt Green in Division Three.

James Nam put in a spirited display to come back in the second set but ultimately lost his singles match 2-6, 5-7.

Ian Bowman came up against a tough opponent in his match and lost 1-6, 3-6 while Joe Maidment was defeated 5-7, 1-6 in his match.

Rich Clive got Droitwich back in the match as he won his singles match 6-1, 6-3 and followed this up with a 7-6, 6-3 win in the doubles with Maidment.

Nam and Bowman were involved in an entertaining doubles match but lost 6-3, 4-6, 0-1 as Barnt Green secured overall victory.

Alex Harris, Ava Clive, Oliver Elvins and Holly Dufty were involved for the under-nines in their 9U Mixed Division Two Group B match against Worcester.

There was some excellent play all round and although Worcester won 6-4, they can be very proud of their efforts.

Elsewhere, there was a victory for the under-tens in Mixed Division Two as they played Ross-on-Wye.

There were wins for Jack Fletcher, Joel Park and Holly Stevens as they secured the win for Droitwich.
