FOOTBALL - Droitwich Spa win at Redditch Borough in County Cup

ALEX Dugmore and James Lemon were on target as Droitwich Spa secured a 2-1 win away at Redditch Borough to advance to the next round of the Worcestershire FA County Cup.

Lemon opened the scoring on 20 minutes before Dugmore’s header put the visitors into a two-nil lead at the break.

And despite Redditch’s Paul Bonar reducing the deficit in the second-half – Andy Crowther’s side held firm to book their place in the quarter-finals.

In difficult conditions, Spa dominated the first-half and created numerous opportunities as Connor Collins, Haydn Morris, Luke Molloy and Cory Rudd all failed to find the net.

And despite having Collins sin-binned for 10 minutes – Spa’s perseverance paid off.

Morris’s shot was saved by the Redditch keeper only for Droitwich captain Lemon to prod home the rebound.

And Spa quickly doubled their lead when Dugmore rose highest in a crowded penalty area to head home into the top corner.

Redditch pulled a goal back through veteran striker Paul Bonar after he found himself with space in the area to nod in from a corner.

The Borough goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save to deny Lemon a second late on after the Spa captain’s opportunistic lob from distance narrowly missed the target.

There was still time for substitute Connor Baker to be denied a certain goal by some excellent defending as Spa comfortably saw out the game to secure a spot in the last eight of the County Cup.
