FOOTBALL - Droitwich Spa boss Crowther reflects on the Saltmen's season

Droitwich Editorial 23rd Dec, 2021   0

DROITWICH SPA manager Andy Crowther insists winning the league title remains the club’s aim this season as they head into the new year third in the table.

The Saltmen have lost just one game in Division One of the West Midlands (Regional) League this season, suffering a 2-1 defeat to leaders Gornal Athletic.

Crowther’s side have three games in-hand on Gornal and can move to within four points of their title rivals should they win all of those matches.

And with no more games until the new year, Crowther is pleased with how his side have performed this campaign.

Crowther said: “The main target is still the title, that’s what we wanted at the start of the season and that’s what we’re pushing for.

“We showed what we can do against Bustleholme, we completely controlled the game from start to finish.

“I’m very pleased, I can’t ask for a lot more from the lads, we’ve only lost the one game to Gornal.

“Fingers crossed the season doesn’t get curtailed and we can carry on after Christmas.

However, Crowther still believes his team can improve and hopes he can call upon a fully fit squad following a break from action over the festive period.

Crowther added: “We need to convert more chances and I hope we can have a set defence to concede less goals, we’ve had a lot of players missing every week.

“Hopefully, we can get James Lemon and Connor Collins scoring having come back into fitness and Connor Baker as well who is starting to show what he can do.

“I don’t think we’ve fully gelled yet, I’m looking forward to seeing all the players gel, hopefully we can push on and improve.

“I’d rather have the points on the board than the games in-hand that we’ve got but the games are there to be won.

The Droitwich boss also has a message for the club’s supporters.

He said: “We’re grateful for all the support we get and from behind the scenes as well, we wish all the supporters a Happy Christmas and stay safe!”
