DROITWICH Spa Cricket Club eased to a five-wicket win against Old Vigornians as they opened their WCB indoor league campaign in stunning fashion.
The game was reduced to ten overs each from the usual 12, after a delayed start eat up valuable time, but Spa made sure their victory was in no doubt when winning the contest with 2.5 overs of the game remaining, to overturn OV’s score of 90.
A quick start was made by Droitwich openers Martyn Davies and Stuart Bryan to establish a solid number of runs early on, although Davies would be the first to go when being run out for 23 in the fourth over with Droitwich over 40 runs to the good.
With Bryan retiring for 25, Matt Gurr struck 23 not out, and captain Rhys John scored 6 not out to guide Spa over the line to victory.
On the field, Spa clocked up regular wickets to keep Old Vigornians’ score low, seeing off the opposition batsmen with a number of run outs – Gurr striking the wickets with the highlight of Droitwich’s fielding after a smart pick-up.
His bowling game also proved just as excellent as he put in a fine all-round performance, being supported well by fellow spinners Davies, John and Jez Hanson – who put in an aggressive showing running up to the crease.
Next up for Droitwich CC is another couple of fixtures against OV’s and Avoncroft in their group, followed by single fixtures against Barnards Green and Cutnall Green.
