Droitwich trio secure victories on the road

Droitwich Editorial 13th Dec, 2018   0

A TRIO of Droitwich Amateur Boxing Club fighters proved they can go the distance after scoring a hat-trick of wins on their travels last weekend.

In his first club bout of the season, 16-year-old Joe Doyle signed off his junior career in style with an impressive victory over fellow England boxer James Sharp from Barton Hill Boxing Club in Bristol.

With more than 80 fights between them, the duo began the contest in Torrington, Devon, at a ferocious pace and the first round was fairly even before Doyle began to dominate.

The Spa youngster opened up in the second with a barrage of body punches which took their toll on his opponent and he followed this up with an array of clean shots in the final round.

Doyle’s victory sets him up nicely for the ABA Championships which start in mid-January, when he also moves up to three-minute rounds at youth level.

There were also emphatic displays from two other Droitwich boxers, who both stopped their opponents.

Thirteen-year-old Stevie Lee Jones overwhelmed Harley Hornby from Wodensborough Boxing Club – his early onslaught of hard punching forcing the referee to step in and end the contest in West Bromwich in the first round.

An equally emphatic performance from Mi Mi Hobby, who overpowered Mia Kaye from the local boxing club in Welshpool in a 50kg girls bout.

The 15-year-old rising starlet was in fine form with her fast jab and strong right hand dominating the first round and proving too much for the home boxer as her total domination resulted in an early stoppage in the second.
