Droitwich Spa made to work hard for friendly victory

Droitwich Editorial 19th Jul, 2018   0

DROITWICH Spa got their pre-season off to a positive start on Saturday but they had to work hard to come away with victory.

In the end it was superior fitness which told as Spa barely allowed Welland any time in their defensive third to claim a 3-0 victory.

James Lemon and Haydn Morris spurned first-half chances while as Welland more than held their own.

Only a superb close-range save by Matt Oliver allowed the two sides to go in level at the break.

Numerous trialists were on show for the Saltmen and they all impressed.

However, it was last season’s Supporters’ Player of the Year, Brad Burgess, who forced the breakthrough with a determined run and low cross which was deflected into the net by a Welland defender after 60 minutes.

Two minutes later it was 2-0 after Burgess beat the offside trap and finished well.

Substitute Dan Cottrill added some gloss to the scoreline with a close range tap-in.

Spa take on Bewdley Town tonight (Thursday) and take on Cadbury Athletic Reserves on Saturday.
