Droitwich claim North Midlands Cup for seventh successive year

DROITWICH under-17s were crowned North Midlands Cup champions for a record seventh consecutive year following their comprehensive 55-5 victory over Lichfield.

Spa’s boys were up for the challenge of defending their title at Wassell Grove, the home of Old Halesonians, after scraping their way to the final with a hard-fought 8-7 victory over Moseley.

In contrast, Lichfield cruised to the final with a 20-10 victory over Worcester.

On a fine sunny day in front of a packed main stand, Droitwich started the game under the cosh for the first ten minutes but they converted a penalty to open up a 3-0 lead.

Lichfield quickly fought back to secure the first try of the game to make it 5-3 midway through the first half.

From this point, Droitwich began to turn the screw to secure a stunning four-try salvo to go into the half-time break with an impressive 29-5 lead.

In the second half, a relentless Droitwich continued to notch up the points before finishing the game as 55-5 winners.

Under cup rules, the match was stopped ten minutes before regulation time as a result of reaching the maximum permissible fifty-point margin.

Droitwich coach Adam Drew said: “Firstly, I’d like to applaud our opponents Lichfield for a very impressive and committed performance.

“They battled hard throughout and we were forced to work extremely hard to score our eight tries.

“We took our time to settle in the match, but we showed good composure and scored some great tries.

“Our record remains intact and that gives me an immense sense of pride for the boys and Droitwich RFC.

“We will now re-group ahead of touch and sevens tournaments which will lead neatly into our summer conditioning and fitness programme.

“Our plans for next season as Colts are well advanced, and we would welcome any boys interested in joining us regardless of their experience.”
