Wychavon residents warned over council tax rebate phone scam

Droitwich Editorial 14th Feb, 2020   0

A WARNING has been issued to Wychavon residents over scammers claiming to be offering a council tax rebate, writes Ashton Price.

The callers say they are from the council’s ‘finance department’ and ask residents to confirm their date of birth, giving them a fake reference number in return.

They then claim the victim has overpaid council tax and is owed money, requesting credit or debit card details so it can be refunded.

A Wychavon District Council spokesperson urged any residents who encountered similar scenarios to put down the phone straight away and call Action Fraud on 0300 123 20 to report it.

“Nobody from any of the three South Worcestershire Councils would ever call you out of the blue to discuss an issue with your council tax and we would never ask you over the phone for your debit or credit card details if we did owe you a refund.”

Anyone who believes their council tax amounts are incorrect can visit gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band to check the details.
