Worcestershire For Europe group to launch Droitwich branch

Droitwich Editorial 2nd Jan, 2019   0

A NEW Droitwich branch of Worcestershire For Europe is to be formed with an inaugural meeting due to take place on Monday, January 7.

The get-together will be held at 7.30pm in the John Corbett Room at Droitwich Spa Community Hall, Heritage Way.

Stuart Thompson, Chair of Worcestershire for Europe, will give an illustrated talk on the aims and objectives of the European Movement and its affiliated local groups, followed by the establishment of the Droitwich Spa local group which will then plan suitable activities locally to support remaining in the EU.

In a statement sent to The Standard the group said: “With deadlock in Westminster over how to move forward with Brexit, and opinion polls showing a significant shift towards remaining in the EU, a meeting is being held in to establish a local branch of Worcestershire for Europe affiliated to the European movement.

“The European Movement is an independent cross-party movement founded in 1949 centred on fostering peace and cooperation with our European neighbours and partners.”

It added, since the 2016 referendum, the movement had grown from around 25 groups to over 100 in 2018.

And it claimed, since the People’s Vote launch in April 2018, the group had been working with other organisations to ensure that there is a vote on the final Brexit deal, including the option to remain.

In the EU Referendum in 2016 in Wychavon District, 57.9 per cent of people voted to leave the European Union with 42.1 per cent opting to remain.

There were a total of 44, 201 votes to leave and 32,188 to remain.

Wychavon District was one of the highest leave voting areas in the country, with the national result standing at 51.9 per cent in favour of Brexit.
