POLICE have launched a week-long knife surrender campaign to help lower weapon-related crime, writes Kirsty Card.

It was launched today (Tuesday) and will run until September 24, allowing people to anonymously surrender their knives in bins at their local police stations, including Redditch and Worcester.

Ch Supt David Gardner said: “Before you take the decision to carry a knife think about the consequences.

“There are not just the consequences to you – the biggest consequence could come if you decide to use the knife and someone ends up getting seriously hurt or worse.

“People who carry knives make a conscious decision to do so.

“There is no excuse if you use it to commit a crime.

“Think twice, leave the knife at home.”

Carriers of knives could face up to four years in prison and those who stab someone could face up to 25 years.
