Website about Droitwich history has bright future after launch

AROUND 40 people turned out to the official launch of the new Historic Droitwich: It’s Streets and People Project website.

The event, at the town’s library, Victoria Square, on Saturday (March 25) featured an illustrated talk on Captain Coningsby Norbury RN 1679 to 1734 by John Holden.

Lyn Blewitt officially unveiled the website which featured many aspects of the history research undertaken by members of the Droitwich and Dodderhill History Research Group.

It also details the findings of the project which began in October 2013 and was due to end yesterday (Friday).

Some more archaeological reports and specialist research from historical buildings surveyors are still due in and will feature on the website in the coming days.

The organisation secured a £35,000 Heritage Lottery Grant for the project and since then, researchers and transcribers have been documenting evidence of the properties and people living in the historic core of the town centre – the High Street and Friar Street.

Experts have undertaken detailed scientific and analytical study of a number of timber-framed properties along with a study of archaeological work undertaken in Droitwich over many years.

Despite the conclusion of the project, the group is hopeful of securing further funding in the future to carry out more research – new building and people relating to Droitwich’s past have already be identified.

Chris Bowers, the project’s treasurer, said: “The launch went very well – all members of our group would like to give thanks to the owners and occupiers of the properties who gave us permission to undertake our investigations.”
