DROITWICH’S new heritage app was officially launched today by town mayor, Coun Bill Moy, and Roman soldier Romulus Maximus, aka Joe Chambers.

The local lad, actor and video producer has put together the humorous promo video (above) with him playing the part of both the soldier and Salt King John Corbett.

The Droitwich Augmented Reality Trail (DART) app is free to download from both the Android Play Store and the Apple Store.

It uses a 3D map similar to Minecraft to guide users around the town where 22 points of historical interest are marked out. When each one is reached, markers can be zapped, similar to Pokemon Go and that leads to a video about that particular point and a Horrible Histories style quiz question. Users will get a virtual bag of salt for each point reached and another for each quiz question answered correctly. There are 69 bags in total to complete the trail.

At the launch today at Droitwich Heritage Centre, Coun Moy said unveiling it was one of the highlights of his mayorship.

Catherine Finn, from the heritage centre, said she was happy the app was finally available  – and in time for the bank holiday weekend.

“We’re so pleased with it – the scripts for the videos have the right combination of facts and humour to enlighten users on our proud history.

“Hopefully people will enjoy it and it will bring more visitors into the town who will then spend money with local businesses while they are here.”

The App which was made possible through funding from Wychavon District Council and it was created by Steak Festival.

Children from local schools also contributed.

Agata Rodak, 11, from Westacre Middle School, said: “They asked us about what design features we would like to see on the app and mine and others were chosen.

“It was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to try out the app.”

She added her favourite place in Droitwich was Vines Park which has three points of interest markers.

Visit the Android Play Store or Apple store to download it.
