Walkers and runners warned over dangers of drowning in open water

A HARD-HITTING campaign has been launched by The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) after shocking statistics showed 40 per cent of those who drowned in the UK were either runners or walkers.

The drowning prevention charity is warning runners and walkers to stay safe near bodies of water as they are most at risk of accidental drowning.

The campaign was launched on Monday (February 20) and among the advice given by the organisation is for people to be aware of their surroundings, take notice of any warning signs when out and about and to stay well clear of bank edges when running or walking near open water as they can lead to slips.

People should always try to run or walk with a friend, make sure someone knows where they are going, take their mobile phone and, if they have not already, learn to swim and life-saving skills.

The campaign uses the hashtag #JustOneSlip and anyone wanting more information should visit www.rlss.org.uk – the charity can also be followed on Twitter @RLSSUK and found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RLSSUK
