THE UNIVERSITY of Birmingham’s Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection Prof Willem van Schaik and frontline doctor David Nicholl will be holding a webinar on Zoom about the pandemic and ‘what happens next’.

The pair of experts will present the question and answer session at 8pm next Thursday, December 10, to enlighten people on the best way forward.

Prof van Schaik, who lives in Bromsgrove, said: “Although the pain from the Covid-19 pandemic has been immense, no one would have predicted when the virus first arrived in Britain at the end of January, that we would have three vaccines awaiting clearance from the regulators by the end of the year.”

Dr Nicholl, who also raised funds for PPE supplies during the pandemic with support from Hugh Grant, added: “What will be the implications for healthcare and wider society in the next year?

“Closer to home, what are the challenges to the NHS over the Christmas and new year period?

“What are the challenges for vaccines in 2021?

“What are the implications of mass COVID screening?”

And he said, after over 75,000 deaths and so much more learnt about Covid-19 and treatment for it, we were still in the middle of a pandemic.

“As Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty has said: ‘this is a marathon not a sprint’,

Prof van Schaik added: “Since early 2020, scientists have pulled out all stops to better understand Covid-19, to development new treatments, and to set up testing labs.

“While the pandemic has been terrible on many levels and many of us have suffered personal losses, I am optimistic that science will get us out of this pandemic through the development of effective vaccines.

“We may soon be entering a new phase of the pandemic in which we have to distribute vaccines to many millions in as short a period of time.

“However, it remains crucially important that the public understands how we need to keep the virus under control in the coming months, before we are all protected by vaccination.”

The event has been organised by West Midlands Liberal Democrats but is open to everybody.
