Western Relief Road needed as part of Whitford development

LAST week we heard the news that plans to build 505 new homes on Whitford Road and the former Greyhound pub were approved by the Planning Inspector. New homes are welcome, but it is vital the right infrastructure is available.

The approval of these plans has raised concerns that calls for a Western Relief Road have now been set back.

The Bromsgrove Lib Dems, other opposition parties and non-politically affiliated campaign groups have consistently argued for a Western Relief Road to cut chronic congestion in

Bromsgrove’s town centre and reduce air pollution on Worcester Road.

A Western Relief Road will ease congestion on our busy A38, reducing time wasted sitting in traffic and the impact of both air and noise pollution on pedestrians passing by.

The Lib Dems previously placed a motion at Bromsgrove District Council calling on the authority to assess the option of a Western Relief Road, but this was voted down by the local Conservatives.

Despite these setbacks, I along with the local Lib Dems will continue to campaign for a Western Relief Road and for a real solution to cut congestion and improve our environment.

Massive thanks to vaccine staff and volunteers

A HUGE vote of thanks must go to the medical staff and volunteer vaccine helpers, who so efficiently and cheerfully gave us our jabs at the Parkside Medical Centre.

It just shows what an effective, dedicated, and caring nation us Brits are in a national emergency. A bit like 1940!

I felt quite humble that so many Bromsgrove people had given up their time to help us.

Our vaccine rollout is months ahead of the EU, and we have vaccinated five times more people than Germany.

Perhaps somebody could remind us of the benefits of staying in the EU?

So lucky to have these healthcare services so close

I WENT to the Princess of Wales Community Hospital on Thursday and thought I would write in to say how wonderful the staff and the whole process while I was there was.

The way they looked after me – from the moment I arrived, through my appointment, was brilliant.

There will be people reading this who are concerned about going into hospitals at this time because of the pandemic but I want them to know they have no need to worry.

The whole process went like clockwork from start to finish and the safety measures and cleanliness was impeccable.

I’m sure as well that with the way the vaccination programme is going there will be better times ahead.

We are so lucky here in Bromsgrove to have so many good people looking after our health and wellbeing.

‘MP needs to be more effective for the district’

WITH reference to the lead sentence in the article on page 49 of last week’s edition of Mail on Sunday saying ‘Cometh the man, cometh the hour’ referring to Sajid Javid, the all singing and dancing member for Bromsgrove, the trouble is that he cannot sing or dance.

In fact he is completely useless as the MP for Bromsgrove where he was parachuted into the position after the forced demise of the existing holder and as far as I can tell true to form has done nothing for us voters.

In his case from this launch pad into Government he has achieved absolutely nothing of note and through to the rise to his last post at the untimely demise of all the previous holders.

His rapid rise in the ranks I put it down to the backing of his ‘grey suits’ and it was these he refused to sack, hence his resignation from his final post and now I see the ‘grey suits’ are at it again trying to line him up once more in a Government position where he will prove as ineffective as his pervious record proves.

Recipes From My Travels is a Godsend during lockdown

I JUST wanted to send my thanks and praise for the recipes that have been appearing in the Standard of late,

I’ve tried many and have found them all to be successful and delicious.

Perhaps more of these a week would be beneficial, particularly during lockdown as cooking is one of the few joys left.

EDITOR’S COMMENT

WE HAVE seen great potential with electric vehicles this week after Bromsgrove District Council announced £250,000 was being ringfenced for a community shuttle bus and Wychavon revealed it has road-tested a bin lorry and road sweeper.

A move towards more electric private cars and vans is the next step but they are outside the price range of most drivers, compared to petrol and diesel vehicles.

The Government needs to work with manufacturers on a scheme to make them more affordable.
