A PURPLE Poppy Appeal is being launched following a partnership between the Blue Cross and the War Horse Memorial organisation.

National Purple Poppy Day – to remember animals who lost their lives in war – is on August 23.

The drive will help raise funds for animals in need and support and UK equine charities.

On June 8, 2018, a war memorial to horses was unveiled in Ascot, dedicated to the millions of UK, Allied and Commonwealth horses, mules and donkeys who made the ultimate sacrifice during The Great War.

The Blue Cross helped horses and other animals which were sent to the frontline in the First World War, setting up a number of hospitals in France and Italy.

Today, the charity focuses on helping animals and the funds from the Purple Poppy will enable the organisation to care for the many animals for another 100 years.

War Horse Memorial chief executive Alan Carr said: “Animals remained a crucial part of the war effort.

“The Poppy Appeal provides that lasting legacy by raising funds for animals in need.”

The Blue Cross will sell the purple poppies at its rehoming centre in Bromsgrove and its charity shops in the town, Droitwich and Pershore.
