PUPILS from Droitwich’s Westacre Middle School headed down to the Houses of Parliament to see MPs at work recently.

The 16-strong school parliament were given the chance to view both the House of Common and Lords in session.

They were greeted by Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston who took time to answer the children’s questions and share some of his stories about life as an MP.

The pupils also took part in a law-making and democracy workshop, where they were asked to come up with issues they would like to debate and make laws about.

Deputy headteacher Catherine Doolin said:”The children raised a variety of subjects that were important to them, including: gender pay equality, the banning of plastic straws, testing of cosmetics on animals and the increase of sport in schools.”

The Westacre MPs meet with teaching staff each week to share ideas about school life along with sharing the views of the children on what is important to them in their learning, they have also helped to organise many charity events.

Westacre Middle School encourage all their children to take an interest in the wider world, and to be confident in forming and expressing their own opinions.
