DROITWICH swimming sensation Matt Richards will receive official civic recognition for being part of the gold medal winning Team GB 4x200m freestyle relay team at the Olympics.

Coun Bill Moy, mayor of Droitwich Spa, said: “We wish to express congratulations to Matt Richards and the ‘Team GB’ Olympic swimming freestyle relay squad for their tremendous gold medal achievement in Tokyo this week.

“Matt’s connections and family links with Droitwich Spa and the local Dolphins Swimming Club have made the town and community immensely proud.”

Coun Moy added he looked forward to receiving Matt and his family after the games in order to confer an Official Civic recognition for his sporting performance and victory from the town.

The 18-year-old swam the third leg of the race, after the first two by Tom Dean and James Guy.

Richards increased Team GB’s lead and handed over to Duncan Scott who continued the fine form with a finish which left the quartet just 0.03 outside the World Record.
