A GROUP of Mercian Nordic Walkers has been praised for their actions after helping out an elderly couple after the man had fallen on the side of the canal in Droitwich.
The incident happened on Wednesday (June 8) as the group, led by Pam Dunstone, were walking along the waterway towards the village of Hadzor.
The walkers noticed the pair were distressed and found the man, who was disabled, had fallen and his partner was unable to help him.
With temperatures rising, they became concerned and decided to call an ambulance.
And, because they were in an inaccessible area, one of the group went to meet the ambulance and led the paramedics to the man.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said after attending to him and realising he did not need hospital treatment, they left him in the care of his GP who had arrived on the scene. The walkers then continued on their way.
Ian Northcott, the owner of Mercian Nordic Walking said: “I am immensely proud that Pam and her group suspended their walk to help this unfortunate couple – it just shows that with us being out in the great outdoors we can try to assist anyone who needs help.
“Instructors with Mercian Nordic Walking are all fully first aid trained. I would like to thank the walkers who were happy to suspend their walk to help.”
