THE M5 motorway could be set to become the second most disrupted road in the UK after research was carried out using data from the Department for Transport (DfT).
The figures took into account the number of projects for each region, including ongoing works and planned improvements over the next three years.
From that, vanmonster.com worked out the total number of days of delays drivers could face in the coming months.
The findings were also paired with official traffic data from the DfT to estimate how many journeys could be disrupted between now and 2021.
A total of 107 A-roads and motorways were analysed by Vanmonster with the M5 being ranked second. It took into account 60 sets of roadworks, totalling 288 days of delays in the next three years.
Looking at regions, the roads in the West Midlands also finished second from the top. Vanmonster estimates with 101 sets of roadworks, drivers across the West Midlands could face 1,210 days worth of delays and 107,335,929 journeys affected between now and 2021.
The worst road overall was judged to be the M1 with 74 sets of roadworks, equating to 199 days worth of delays and the worst region was the north-west where almost 200million journeys were affected.
A transport supervisor from a Bromsgrove haulage firm told The Standard he did not agree with the M5’s ranking.
“I think our drivers would say for us the M6, M1 and M25 are far worse.
“I do agree something has to be done long-term to improve our motorways as there is more traffic on them than ever before.
“I was a driver for 12 years and noticed the increase.”
He added he felt the introduction of the smart motorway on the M5, increasing the number of lanes from three to four had helped raise capacity and cut delays.
