Light a beacon in Droitwich for VE Day anniversary

Droitwich Editorial 17th Apr, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016

RESIDENTS across Worcestershire are being urged to organise the lighting of their own beacons to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

The Victory in Europe milestone falls on May 8 and, on that Friday, at sun-down, there will be a chain of beacons lit across the country to kick-start a weekend of commemorations.

The county’s official one will take place at the Worcestershire Beacon on the Malvern Hills at 9.32pm, where there will be a number of veterans and local dignatries in attendance to remember the peace that began seven decades ago.

Towns, parishes and local communities are also being invited to join in with the celebration by lighting their own bonfire beacons, just as was done in 2012 to mark HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Alan Smith, Worcestershire Partnership Manager, said: “This is such a significant moment in our recent history as we celebrate light emerging from the darkness of war, and the triumph of the human spirit.

“Everything we do today is because of the ultimate sacrifice made by hugely courageous people more than 70 years ago.

“It’s really important we continue to remember and pass on this message to our younger members of society.

“What better way to do this than with a flaming beacon that will be seen for miles around, heralding the start of festivities and events across the county.”

There will also be a two-minute silence at 3pm on May 8 and there will be a VE Day concert broadcast live on the BBC.

Those wanting to find out more, should visit and search for VE Day.
