DROITWICH residents wanting to try out tennis can pick up a racket at a special event being held in the town next Saturday (August 6).
Tennis in the Park will begin at 1pm at the Lido Park tennis courts and last for the whole afternoon and residents of all ages are welcome to give the sport a go.
The free fun sessions will be at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, with each session lasting an hour each.
Those who have rackets can take them along but equipment can be provided.
The event has been organised by Droitwich Tennis Club in conjunction with campaigners who are trying to get the Lido Park tennis courts resurfaced.
There will be representatives from both organisations there who will be able to speak to people, not only about playing tennis in the town but also the campaign which has gone from strength to strength since its launch last month.
The ‘Let’s Play Tennis in Droitwich Spa’ campaign was started by Elaine Newman to raise £40,000 to refurbish the courts.
Elaine was concerned about the courts falling into a state of repair over the years and them being laden with potholes.
And she fears if they are left much longer they will become completely unusable and so launched the project to revamp the area for everyone in the town.
Wychavon District Council offered its support by agreeing to provide £20,000 in match-funding when the initial £20,000 can be raised.
Following on from the launch, Droitwich Tennis Club and MP Nigel Huddleston also got on board and almost £1,500 has so far been pledged for the project.
