THE ARTWORK is due to be completed today on the first Droitwich underpass to be given a revamp by a Wychavon District Council-led community art project.

The walkway on Hunters Way has been decorated with a swimming-themed design, inspired by feedback from children from Westlands First School.

Worcester-based artists Chroma Chameleons created the eye-catching mural and pupils from the school were present to see their dream become a reality.

The underpass is the first of seven which will be transformed into public works of art as part of the Droitwich Underpass Art Project.

Other underpasses included in the project include the A38 Westlands to King George V playing fields walkway, Briar Mill, Crofters Hill, Ombersley Way, Paddock Hill and Droitwich Spa Railway Station.

The project is funded by Wychavon District Council and Droitwich Spa Town Council. Worcestershire County Council is also supporting the scheme.

A steering group of local stakeholders has been overseeing the project with representatives from organisations including Droitwich Arts Network, Westlands Residents Group, Droitwich Action for Future Youth, Droitwich Spa Youth Council, Droitwich Spa High School, Platform Housing Group, the Droitwich Standard, and West Mercia Police.

The aim is to promote local pride by celebrating the community and history of the town, as well as improving the look and feel of the underpasses to increase walking and cycling opportunities.

Other works to enhance the sites, such as lighting upgrades, are also being carried out.

Coun Chris Day, Wychavon District Council’s executive board member for housing, health and wellbeing, said: “The response from the community to this project has been fantastic and it’s wonderful to see work on the first underpass has started.

“I look forward to the rest of the underpasses being completed over the coming weeks.”
