A STAGGERING amount of litter was found near the A38 Ombersley/Chawson island on Sunday, including seven shopping trollies and four bikes.
The items were discovered by volunteers of the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad who split into two teams to cover more ground.
Starting at 8am, one group began cleaning out an area of the River Salwarpe and the other group the A38.
Also found were two child scooters, a large builder’s trolley, six traffic cones and 16 bags of rubbish.
Volunteer Karen Blanchfield said: “The river was flowing a lot better after the removal of this rubbish.
“Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we were thanked by a number of locals.
“I was extremely honoured to be invited to participate in an incredibly difficult but inspirational litter pick.”
Droitwich councillor John Hartley added: “It’s important to clarify that this is ‘entrenched’ rubbish and litter – in some cases accumulated over many decades – that is being purged from our natural landscape.
“I have been out picking with the Droitwich Spa Litter Squad on a number of occasions when it has been safe to do so, and it’s great to see their dynamism and proactive approach to caring for our common home.
“What started as just a small group of individuals has rapidly snowballed into a flourishing community with a couple hundred members.”
