DROITWICH Spa Civic Society, which has been running for almost 50 years, could be set to fold because of a decline in members and a reduction in meetings due to the Covid pandemic.
The organisation was formed in 1974 in response to the rapid development of the town.
Since its inception, it has represented the community by providing comment on how Droitwich Spa could be enhanced and developed to benefit all of its residents.
Members, some of whom were civil engineers, town planners and managers, brought their skills and knowledge to the committee table, and regular monthly meetings with talks and visits generated a wider support for the work of the society.
But – like many other local societies and community groups – the group was hit during coronavirus and struggled to meet.
Lower attendances when it did meet and committee members retiring and not being replaced, along with an ageing membership, has forced the committee to consider the society’s future and its role.
The committee’s concern is that – despite repeated attempts to encourage others to join the committee and take on the role of chairperson, this had not happened.
The society’s future, along with its sustainability, became a major concern and the committee have agreed a structured and planned dissolution of the society was the only way forward.
Members will consider the committee’s resolutions to dissolve the society at the AGM on Monday, July 11.
If approved, a final vote on the agreed resolutions to fold the organisation will take place at a specially convened General Meeting on July 29 at the Sacred Heart Church Hall, followed by a relaxed social event to say farewell to the Civic Society.
