Droitwich school announces the winner of its creative writing award

DROITWICH Spa High School has announced the winner of it’s Karen Moore Award for Creative Writing.

The award, which is sponsored by Droitwich Arts Network, received more than forty entries from year groups across the school, who were vying for a trophy and a cash prize of £100.

This year’s title was ‘The Silence of the Crowd’ and first round judges including former deputy head Karen Moore and Droitwich Arts Network chair Helen Karakashian selected the final four entries to be judged by the schools ex head girl Katie Bowen.

Katie, who is now studying English at The Queen’s College Oxford, then named Isobel Sprague in Year 10 as the winner, with Rhiannon Green, also in year 10 runner up.

Year 8 student Mary-Jane Peace and year 11’s Eva Palmer were the other two finalists.

The award was established in 2019 after Karen Moore retired as the schools deputy head.

She said: “As this is the fourth year we have run the competition, I am delighted that the number of entries continues to go up and that entries are coming in from year groups across the school.

“Some of the younger students were able to show their exceptional writing skills which bodes well for the future.

“The diversity of ideas across the entries was astonishing, we read a lot of creative thinking and writing which is exactly the purpose of the competition.”
