DROITWICH teenage swimming sensation Matt Richards who won gold as part of the Team GB freestyle 200m relay team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has spoken of his delight at being made an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours.

Matt was 18 when the quartet won the race, finishing just 0.03 seconds outside the World Record.

On Twitter Matt, who turned 19 on December 17, said: “After a pretty great year, I’m so honoured to announce that Her Majesty has awarded me an MBE in this years New Years Honours list.

“I’m so thankful for everyone who has helped so far, and can’t wait to get going again. #Onlythebeginning.”

Matt’s team mates in the final – Tom Dean, James Guy and Duncan Scott – as well as heat swimmer Calum Jarvis have all been made MBEs for services to swimming.
