Droitwich foodbank organisers say a big thank you

THE ORGANISERS of the Droitwich Spa Foodbank want to say a big thank you to residents for all their time, money and donations which have made the project such a success.

The scheme – to help those living locally in crisis – was launched in July and since then has gone from strength to strength.

Among those who have contributed to its success have been more than 80 volunteers who have been helping out at the foodbank warehouse and centre on a regular basis, Laura McCullough who encouraged people to join her in giving extra Christmas items to the foodbank, the local scout group which spent an evening assisting at the warehouse and Waitrose staff who helped at the supermarket’s recent food collection.

Droitwich Spa Foodbank project leader David Stanbury said everyone had been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people who had supported the scheme in so many ways.

“We were delighted by the response to the two supermarket collections we held recently, at Waitrose and Tesco, which resulted in donations of nearly 1.5 tonnes of food.

“People have also been donating at our permanent collection points at Barclays and Lloyds banks, Gorgeous Hair Design, Physique Gym, and at the town’s Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Emmanuel and Salvation Army churches.”

During the five months it has been operating, the Droitwich Foodbank has helped more than 180 people, including 57 children, who have been supplied with three days worth of emergency food.

“Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, who told his followers to care for those in need, and we’ve been asking people to donate additional items such as Christmas cakes or puddings, mince pies, and chocolates to help the families who are referred to us by our partner agencies to enjoy a special festive treat.”
