People flock from miles around to the outdoor saltwater pool and, with it having being closed during the Coronavirus lockdown, it is expected to draw the crowds even more when it reopens on August 1.

It follows the announcement by the Government that gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools could reopen again this month.

Wychavon Leisure, which runs the Lido on behalf of Wychavon, has been unable to open for its summer season due to the

Covid-19 outbreak and there were fears it would remain shut throughout 2020.

The plan now is to reopen the pool for a six week period from 1 August to September 13 but with a reduced number of swimmers at any one time.

Sessions will also be time-limited.

Other Covid-19 secure measures will be in place including enhanced cleaning and online booking and payment systems.

The closure and limit on visitor numbers will leave the Lido facing a significant shortfall.

Wychavon has now stepped in to agree to subsidise the pool this summer to make sure it survives the current crisis, with the hope the lido can reopen as usual in 2021.

Tim Kirkham, Wychavon Leisure area manager, said: “We are delighted to receive this financial support from Wychavon District Council to allow us to open our unique Lido facility.

“This support, along with help from Friends of Droitwich Spa Lido (FODSL), will enable the local community and people that travel to Droitwich Spa Lido to enjoy their swimming in our beautiful idyllic open air pool once again this year.”

Wychavon District Council leader Coun Bradley Thomas said: “So many people enjoy a visit to Droitwich Lido, not just from the district but across the region, and we are delighted to be able to support our leisure partner in this way to reopen this fantastic facility.

“I hope this news will give a real lift to not only our residents, but to Droitwich as a whole.

“All we need now is the weather.”

Wychavon’s Leisure Centres in Evesham, Droitwich and Pershore, which Wychavon Leisure also runs on behalf of the council, will also reopen on July 25 with safety measures in place.
