Could you become a volunteer lock keeper on the region's canals?

AN APPEAL has been launched to find people to become volunteer lock keepers for canals in Droitwich and Worcester and Birmingham canals.

The plea to fill the most iconic of the waterways roles comes from The Canal and River Trust.

Those taking up the challenge will be based at the locks along the two canals, helping passing boaters, welcoming visitors and giving a helping hand to the Trust’s teams as they work maintaining the canals.

Lock keepers have been part of the waterways for centuries and the volunteers will help keep this historic tradition alive.

Full training is provided and people of all ages – as long as they are over 18 – and varying experiences are encouraged to apply. Volunteer lock keepers work on a shift basis throughout the year, with busier periods typically expected between April and October.

Caroline Kendall, The Canal and River Trust’s volunteer development co-ordinator, said: “It’s a great role for anyone keen to work outdoors and meet new people.

“You’ll learn some new skills too and all-in-all provide a huge amount of help for the thousands of visitors we get to the canals each year.”

Applications for the role are open until now, with training and induction beginning in March.

The Canal and River Trust cares for 1,583 locks nationwide and there are approximately 3.8million ‘lockings’ each year (passages through locks).
