Committee struggles will see curtain come down on Droitwich Concert Club after 43 years

A DROITWICH charity which has staged more than 250 chamber music concerts in the town over the last 43 years will hold its final extravaganza in two weeks time.

Droitwich Concert Club remains as popular as ever but is ceasing to be because of a lack of numbers to serve on its committee.

Liz Ceredig, Droitwich Concert Club spokesperson, said the inevitable conclusion had been coming for a considerable time.

“We have not had a full committee or a chairman for years – the treasurer has been the acting chairman over the last few and I think now Droitwich Concert Club has run its course.

“It really is the end of an era.”

When the club started out, it was at Droitwich Spa High School in the lecture theatre.

“We moved to the Methodist Church because the acoustics are amazing and there is plenty of parking there – people just love going to concerts there,” said Liz.

The final concert at 7.30pm on July 1 at Droitwich Methodist Church will be a fitting one to bring the curtain down for the final time – performing it will be Charles Owen who was born and bred locally and has progressed to be recognised as one of the finest pianists of his generation.

He studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School, Royal College of Music, has won many awards, has performed all over the World and appears regularly at leading festivals. He is a Professor of Piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

At the concert on July 1, Charles will perform a programme including Bach’s English Suit no 3, Beethoven’s Sonata op 27 no 2 – The Moonlight, six Nocturnes by Chopin and Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit.

Liz added the concert club had accomplished a lot over the years and she hoped – with the club’s grand finale getting closer – as many people as possible would come and offer their support one last time.

“We are hoping it will be packed to the rafters so we can really go out with a bang.”

Tickets for priced at £10 to include refreshments, are available on 01905 779736.
