Christmas and New Year bin collections across Droitwich and the rest of Wychavon

Droitwich Editorial 22nd Dec, 2021   0

THE ARRANGEMENTS for bin collections across Droitwich and the rest of Wychavon District have been announced and the council say there will be no changes this year to the usual days.

Collections will take place on people’s usual collection day this year as Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day fall on the weekend.

And, even though December 27, 28 and January 3 are bank holidays, crews will still be collecting. Bins should still be put out by 7am on people’s usual collection day, as pick up times may be different from what people are used to at other times of the year.

Residents can put out up to two extra black bags of general rubbish from Monday, December 27 to Friday, January 7.

There is no limit on the amount of extra recycling that can be put out, but it must be put into clear plastic bags which are available from libraries in Evesham and Droitwich and from the Civic Centre in Pershore.

To help people get their recycling right, Wychavon has produced a list of the 10 items people most commonly search for after Christmas to find out how to recycle them properly, and advice on what to do with them.

Advice on specific Christmas and other items

Wrapping paper – if it scrunches in your hand and holds its shape then it can go in the green recycling bin. Just remove any bows, ribbon, tags and as much sticky tape as possible.

Real Christmas trees – garden waste customers can chop them up and put the pieces in their brown bin or cut the tree it into manageable pieces and put it by the side of the brown bin. They can be composted at home or taken to a Household Recycling Centre.

Clothing – if in good condition donate to charity, pass on to friends or sell online. Clothing can also go in textile recycling banks at Household Recycling Centres and some textiles can be put in a plastic bag on top of your black bin and crews will take them for recycling. Visit Wychavon’s website for more information.

Electrical items – these can be taken to Household Recycling Centres or some small electric items can go on top of the black bin and crews will take them for recycling. Never put electrical items in the green or black bin.

Glass – glass jars and bottles of all colours go in green bins but no other types of glass. See Wychavon’s glass recycling guide on their website for more information.

Plastic film – this cannot be recycled at the kerbside so should go in your black bin. Some supermarkets may take it for recycling. Check in store for details.

Christmas Cards – if they are free from glitter and bows then put them in the green bin or save them to use as tags next year.

Decorations – if they cannot be reused again next year then they need to go in the black bin. Broken Christmas lights should be taken to a Household Recycling Centre.

Mobile phones – these can be taken to Household Recycling Centres in the Wychavon area or sent to specialist recycling companies. Search online for information.

Coffee pod capsules – people may be able to recycle these using www.podback.org. If not then they need to go in the black bin.

Coun Emma Stokes, Executive Board Member for Environment and Street Scene on Wychavon District Council, said: “Christmas is a wonderful time of the year but it can also be very wasteful.

“We have fantastically committed recyclers in Wychavon and I thank everyone for their efforts throughout the year.

“This Christmas let’s see if we can recycle more than we ever have before.”
