Businesswoman takes Tory by-election win

Droitwich Editorial 8th Aug, 2015 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

A DROITWICH businesswoman has been voted onto Wychavon District Council following a by-election in the Droitwich East ward.

And there was double delight for Conservative Karen Tomalin, known by many as The Bra Lady, as she was also co-opted into the vacant seat on Droitwich Town Council on Monday (August 3).

At the Wychavon District poll last Thursday (July 30), Karen polled 495 votes — 320 more than Labour candidate, Jacqueline Ann O’Reilly, who finished second. Third was UKIP’s Andrew Roger Morgan with 171 votes and fourth was Rory Leslie Roberson (Lib Dem), who received 108 votes.

The seat was left vacant following the death of former mayor Glenise Noyes and the turn-out was 22.13 per cent.

The result means Wychavon District Council is now made up of 39 Conservatives, five Liberal Democrats and one UKIP councillor.

Karen, who has worked in Droitwich for the last ten years and had her Bras 2U business in the town for the last four-and-a-half, thanked everyone who voted for her.

She told The Standard: “The district council seat was quite a safe Conservative one, but you never know what is going to happen so we did not get complacent.

“I’m delighted to have won.

“The turn-out was not as high as the previous one because we did not have the draw of the general election.

“And it’s great to be on Droitwich Town Council as well.”

She will now undertake her training in the coming weeks and be mentored by some of the more established councillors.
