Appeal for Droitwich footballers and jacket sponsors

Droitwich Editorial 15th Aug, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

PLAYERS and a jacket sponsor are being sought for a new Droitwich football team which launches next month.

Westbury Celtic Phoenix Under 14s is being run by Tony Ciriello who has been coaching for the last three years.

He said his sessions would focus on technical development, skills expression and problem solving all within an environment in which the creativity was actively encouraged.

“I firmly believe in the idea that young players should be taught how to play not, how to win.

“Ultimately, the boys should be confident and have belief in what they can achieve if they apply themselves and of course should enjoy the game.

“I believe that if the boys focus on enjoyment and development, the results will come naturally,” he added.

Tony encourages the boys to take part in futsal sessions in conjunction with a University of Worcester student. Futsal is a form of indoor football pioneered in South America to increase technical skill.

Tony also has the backing of the The Albion Foundation, a community project run by Premier League club West Brom, to support him in delivering his training sessions.

He will be able to draw upon the expertise of the foundation’s coach Richard Holmes.

“For me, one of the hallmarks of the foundation, something I also believe in, is that sessions are made interactive where the boys are asked to solve problems and provide their feedback in a two-way discussion.

“Unfortunately, at grassroots level, there is often a win at all costs mentality which I believe is having a detrimental impact upon youth development,” added Tony.

Richard said he was delighted The Albion Foundation was helping with the project.

“Droitwich is one of the newer areas we are covering – this is probably the third or fourth time we have assisted there.”

He added the foundation would be helping provide quality coaching to give opportunities to young people in the town.

Anyone who wants to find out more about the team or who can help with jacket sponsorship can call Tony on 07576 127630.
