MORE than 1,200 coats and other items of warm clothing will be going to help homeless people stay warm this winter thanks to a campaign by a Bromsgrove man.

Alan Gormley only launched the appeal last month and he has been inundated with items.

People generously donated from Bromsgrove, Droitwich and Redditch but also from afar afield as Wednesbury.

Wednesday was the last day people could donate and brought the curtain down on an amazing scheme.

Hundreds have already been distributed to organisations, including Birmingham’s YMCA and rough sleeping unit, which will get them to those who need the coats.

The rest will be distributed in the coming days.

Alan, who runs the town’s Walking Sports Hub and got the idea after seeing a Tweet from the Big Issue, told the Standard:

“Our appeal has exceeded our wildest expectations.

“Thanks to the kindness, compassion and generosity of our local communities so many more people will be having a warmer and happier Christmas than they were anticipating.”

The coats campaign, generosity and kindness has also inspired other similar campaigns which will mean even more homeless people will get additional help in the run up to Christmas.

Helen, an NHS workter from Bromsgrove, has launched a ‘Christmas Wrapping’ drive for bedding for the homeless and vulnerable people across Worcestershire.

Anyone who wants to find out more or who can help provide bedding should call Helen on 07525 068966.
