£601k boost from Police and Crime Commissioner and Children's Society link-up will help stop young people getting into crime

Droitwich Editorial 22nd Mar, 2020

YOUNG people who are at risk of committing crimes or being exploited will be helped by a new scheme which has been set up, thanks to funding worth £601,979, writes Caprice Harrison.

The cash has come from West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion who has teamed up with The Children’s Society for the project.

The Early Intervention and Prevention service for ten to 17-year-olds will include sports, dance, arts and music and local organisations are now being sought who can help deliver the activities.

The service will work with individuals who are missing education, started to be reporting as missing or at risk of entering the criminal justice system.

The funding will enable the project to run over the next three years.

Mr Campion said: “I am committed to improving the lives of young people and preventing them from going down the wrong path in life.

“The trauma these individuals can experience in their lives leaves them vulnerable, which greatly increases the risk of them being exploited or entering the criminal justice system.”

Mark Russell, Children’s Society chief executive, said: “This is the first programme of its kind and it is fantastic the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner has recognised the value of preventative work in the area.

“This promises to be a truly transformative programme, helping children find new passions, form new, healthy friendships and learn how to recognise people and situations that may put them at risk.”

Organisations able to offer diversionary activities within West Mercia can register their interest
