THE WEEK before the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham was taken over by the British Athletics Grand Prix which saw Mo Farah compete in his only indoor competition of the year, a number of Bromsgrove & Redditch Athletic Club athletes visited the arena to take part in the Midlands Championships.
Joshua Pearson was the youngest B&R athlete to take part and he competed in the u13 age category, finishing third overall in his four-event programme of 60m sprint (first, 8.39s), shot putt (11th, 4.80m), high jump (joint fourth, 1.27m) and long jump (third, 4.30m).
In the u17 men’s competition Andrew Pearson placed third in his 400m heat with a time of 57.76s and ran the exact same time in the final which placed him sixth.
In the u20 men’s age group Simeon Clarence finished second in his 400m heat with a time of 51secs as well as clinching third in the long jump with a jump of 6.17m.
Dewi Hammond took second in his 60m sprint in 7secs behind Taunton athlete Ronnie Wells, who also beat him in the final despite Dewi taking his finishing time down to 6.92s.
The senior men’s competition saw Thomas Russell finish third in his 200m heat (23.99s) and David Mould third in his 400m heat (51.66s).
Richard O’Connor just missed out on a medal in the shot putt as he finished fourth with a throw of 8.51m.
The u15 ladies competition saw Candy Lockett finish third in the shot putt with a throw of 8.55m and Jessica Bennett come sixth in the 60m hurdles (10.45s) and fifth in the 60m heat (8.75s).
In the u17 category Rebekah Miller finished fourth in her 60m heat (8.42s) and third in the 200m heat (27.29s).
Izzy Billau placed third in the u20 triple jump competition with a leap of 10.94m and Jo Frost was second in the senior women’s long jump competition with 5.34m.
A number of personal bests were attained to achieve these results in what was a good start to 2013.
THE final Midlands Women’s League Cross Country race took place in Cheltenham and out of the 180 entrants Sally Hogan finished 18th overall (4th in age category) followed by Katy Anderson (28th), Tamara Ball (47th), Melanie Hepke (63rd), Charlotte Ball (87th) and Jane Anderson (115th).
In the overall League Competition, the Ladies finished third which is one of the club’s biggest achievement for at least ten-years. More bronze came in the guise of Sally Hogan finishing third in the u20 age category across the series.
The Men were also racing at Cheltenham in the final race of the Division Two Birmingham League series.
Richard Lomas was first in for the club in 15th, followed by Joe Smith (48th), Kevin Lanckham (51st), Sean Bowden (65th), Simon Lanckham (74th), Steve Williams (75th), Dean Hartshorn (98th), Ian Keyte (100th), Darryll Thomas (129th), Jamie Dancyger (147th), Matthew Henney (158th), Peter Hawcroft (164th), Ian Nutter (172nd).
The Juniors took part in their final West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League race in Perry Barr.

The team finished ninth overall on the day out of 20 teams and are awaiting confirmation that they also took ninth across the series which would see them climb up the league table a place from last year.
