A MAJOR review of Droitwich's conservation area has been launched by Wychavon District Council in a bid to continue to protect the town's historic sites.

Residents have been urged to have their say about the plans to alter the conservation area boundary during a public consultation which began last Thursday (January 17) and runs until March 5.

A public meeting will be held at Droitwich Library on February 5 from 6pm for residents to air their views on the document which is part of a continued review of conservation areas in the district.

The appraisal identifies the special interest of the conservation area and will be taken into account when planning applications for the area are considered.

Wychavon's conservation officer, Elaine Artherton, said: "Droitwich has considerable architectural, historic and archaeological interest with more than two thousand years of settlement history.

"The Droitwich salt industry is exceptional in preserving evidence for salt production from the Iron Age until the nineteenth century.

"Although the historic town has been affected by twentieth century development, it has still retained elements of its historic plan, many of its historic buildings and a strong local identity," she added.
