WYCHAVON District Council chiefs have been left shocked after being told they face a Government funding cut of more than £1million over the next two financial years.
Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles MP confirmed the amount of cash to be handed out to local council’s in the House of Commons last Friday (December 21).
And while the authority said it had been preparing for its share of Government funding to be cut, it had still been shocked at the deep cuts to smaller councils.
Deputy Managing Director, Vic Allison, said the council would lose £394,000 from its funding next year but a further £742,000 in 2014/15.
"While we were expecting, and preparing for a reduction, we're shocked at the scale of reduction for small shire councils," he added.
"We will work on more creative solutions than just cut backs and will update residents on our proposals in the New Year."
Members of the authority's executive board will discuss the funding cuts at a meeting in January.
Worcestershire County Council has seen its grant fall by 2.4 per cent but leader Adrian Hardman said it was in line with what they had expected.
"We expected the support from Government would be cut by about £10 million and we expect it to be slightly less than that," he said.
"Looking further on we know the lift gets heavier in years to come. We are extremely well prepared with a long-term plan and a medium-term plan we will be sticking to."
The Department of Communities and Local Government released a list of 50 ways councils could save money along with the funding figures, which include sharing back office functions, reducing senior management posts and pay and cutting down on
