Wychavon District Council chairman Richard Morris writes for The Standard.
LAST week I held a reception at the council offices called ‘A Summer to Remember’ to recognise people across Wychavon who participated in the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics and Paralympics.
Not everyone could attend but those that did brought pictures and memorabilia from the summer. Whether it was joining in with the river pageant, carrying the Olympic torch, being a judge, a games maker of supporting the events in other ways (such as the ceremony fireworks) many people have had a summer they will never forget.
What pleases me is how these national events have also affected our communities with community games, volunteering and sport participation, a once in a lifetime summer will inspire a generation and live with us all a very long time.
Other events over the month have included: Laying the first tree for a jubilee orchard in Harvington (part of an innovative flood defence); my Charity Ball recognising 50 years of James Bond and the reopening of the Wood Norton outside Evesham.
My Wychavon remembrance poetry competition saw some excellent entries and I have already been to many of the schools to thank them for participating.
I would like to thank the British Legion and clergy for including the poems in the Remembrance Day activities.
As we approach Christmas let us remember those who have meant so much to us and do something good in their memory.
E-mail me at Richard.firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to donate to my charities - Wychavon Cadet troops, Young Carers and St Richard’s Hospice or if I can help by attending an event.
