A RETIRED Droitwich police officer geared up for an epic challenge and raised more than £8,000 for Acorns Children’s Hospice.
Adrian Todd saddled up with his brothers Mike and Steve Todd and nephew Chris Todd to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End in August.
The 800-plus mile challenge began in the extreme north of Scotland and finished at the southern most point of the UK and saw the kind-hearted foursome raise £8,051 for the Worcester-based hospice.
Their efforts were made all the more special as Adrian, Mike and Steve’s parents John and Dorothy Todd have raised money for the charity themselves for more than two decades.
The couple were on hand to welcome the four back to the hospice on Bath Road and heard details of the epic near 1,000 mile ride.
Among the challenges faced by the riders saw them have to shelter in a builder’s shed during a fierce storm which struck just miles before the finishing line in Lands End.
The remarkable efforts of the Todd family saw them cover 960 miles in just 10 days without the aid of a support vehicle.
John, previously chairman of the Worcestershire Acorns Support group, and Dorothy continue to support the charity through befriending and gardening.
The family team of riders got together to celebrate the family’s work with Acorns and Dorothy said she and John were very proud of their efforts.
Acorns fund-raising manager Carole Crowe, said: “This was a wonderful donation, the Todd family’s faithful support is brilliant, as it costs £750 a day, per child to care for Acorns children – mostly raised from such generous members of the community.
