DROITWICH residents gathered in Victoria Square on Sunday (November 11) to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Spa fell silent at 11am for the town’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations which began at 10.30am with a parade into the town centre by a number of organisations.
Members of the Droitwich Royal British Legion, Air and Army cadets, Boys Brigade, Guides, Scouts, Young Firefighters and youngsters from many Droitwich youth organisations were among those in the parade.
More than 70 wreaths were laid during the service of Remembrance by civic dignitaries such as town Mayor Coun Anne Taft, Wychavon District Council chairman Coun Richard Morris and representatives from a number of local organisations.
Poppy appeal secretary Net Nevey, said: “I would like to thank everyone for taking part and attending, remembrance is
important to us all.”
A church service was then held at St Andrew’s Parish Church followed by refreshments at the British Legion in Salwarpe Road.
Poems on the theme of Remembrance were read both at the church service and at the British Legion by the winners of a
competition run by Coun Morris.
Ella Gardner and Alex Scott from Dodderhill School in the nine to 12-year-old category and Tom Hughes and Luke Harrison from Droitwich High School in the 13 to 16-year-old section were presented with certificates by Coun Taft and Coun Morris.
“I would like to thank the schools for taking part and including the competition into their curriculum as I believe it is important that we help our younger generation participate in remembrance and the entries were of a very high standard,” Coun Morris added.
