A DROITWICH family whose late son was cared for by St Richard's Hospice has raised more than £1,000 for the charity by taking part in a walk to mark the anniversary of his birthday.

John Fletcher and his wife Sue lost their youngest son, Paul, in December 2010, who was 34 and had fought several cancers for more than two years.

Sue, Paul’s wife Sarah and their son Jack, his sister Jane and her husband Peter, along with niece and nephew Megan and Harry Jones walked from Worcester to Blooms Garden Centre near Claines on what would have been Paul’s 36th birthday.

They also had a meal to celebrate the birthday and Paul’s son Jack now wants the walk to be an annual event in memory of his brave dad.

After the three-mile walk, and from a collection around most of the pubs between Droitwich and Worcester, the family raised £260.

On the weekend before, collections from Webbs garden centre in Wychbold saw family and friends collect £617 and £385 was contributed from regulars at Droitwich pubs.

Sue and John Fletcher, who regularly open their lovely garden for St Richard’s, said they wanted to thank everyone who donated to help the charity's work.

John said: "Paul spent the last month of his life in the hospice under the care of the doctors and nurses there and they were totally caring, competent, professional and loving towards him, his wife and four-year-old son and all the family through a very difficult and stressful time as his life came to an end.

“Paul had marvellous support from all who were involved in his treatment, but particularly from the marvellous folk who work at St Richard’s Hospice.”
