A DROITWICH boy, who is just nine-years-old, has won a prestigious award from West Mercia Police for the voluntary work he has carried out at a social club for adults with learning difficulties.

Daniel Birch fought off almost 100 other young people from across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin to be named as one of just ten Young Good Citizens of the Year for the time he gives for Droitwich Challengers Gateway Club.

Daniel lives nextdoor to Eunice Williams, who has run the club for the last 20 years, and got involved in the club through her.

She took him out swimming one day and he met some of the clients.

He then asked if he could help out at the club, which takes place between 7pm and 9pm every Wednesday night at Amphlett House Church Centre.

Daniel helps sell food in the tuck shop and assists with the quiz evenings, bingo, art and craft sessions and the annual barbecue.

Eunice said the accolade was very well deserved.

"Everyone at the club was thrilled to bits when they found out he had won the award.

"Daniel wants to do everything at the club and we have to keep reminding ourselves he is only nine."

Daniel's mum Nicola said: "We are very proud of his achievement - we think it's great that he helps out and gives something back to the community."

His dad Andrew added: "He has always been a very caring person.

"He also helps out with the Young Firefighters Association and assists in any other projects he can."

The Young Good Citizens Awards, which are now in their 25th year, were presented at West Mercia Police's headquarters at Hindlip Hall last Thursday (October 4).
